BUTTERFLIES

Wings, Heartbreak & Vampires

Spoiler free review of 'The Serpent and The Wings of Night' – I really don't know what to tell you but this book will tear open your heart and you better be ready to read it. The latest trending read 'The Serpent and The Wings of Night' by Carissa Broadbent is literally a game changer. Here is what I liked and hated about it.

As soon as I hit the one-hundred page mark, I knew this was going to be an amazing book. Although I had to bare myself for some pretty gruesome parts, it read like butter (is that even something you say?). Carissa did an awful good job of structuring the perfect plot. Building a free fall of quests the main characters had to go through. At the end of the book you knew that something very very bad was closing in. It had all led to that point. But you will never, ever guess the heart-wrenching twist she lured you into.

Short inside on the story: The story revolves around Oraya, a human girl brought up by a Nightborn vampire King who once won the Kijari. Their strange love is what binds all the parts of this book together. Oraya lives in a world that is not a good place for either human or vampire to live in. Long story short, she joins the Kijari – which is a kind of Hunger Games, actually – with as goal to win and collect the wish granted by a Goddess.

Telling you this little, you can imagine the high stakes and the difficulties the main character has to overcome. And to be honest, I was a little sceptical when I first heard the story was going to be like the Hunger Games. I was just not sure if I could endure the trials, kind of knowing how that would go, but tention was delivered in the form of the male love interest.

"There she is..."

The world building is exceptional, to add to the non-spoiler arguments I have been trying to give you. Set in a world beyond imagining. It is made easy understandable, and there is even a glossary at the end of the book if you loose track. Carissa intensively has put together a history of the vampire race and drops elements in the Kijari's trials to make the reader aware of the importance.

It took me a while to get through, even though it read so quick but, hey, sometimes life gets in the way. In total I probably read it in like three days, of which I read 150+ pages the last day by staying up to 2 am. I bawled my eyes out when the plot finally hit. It confused me so much, I did not even know if I liked or hated it. Everything was so intense and different from everything I have read before.

Now that I had some time to reflect, I can say that I hate Carissa for being such a great, independent writer – joking, bless her.

The book is currently trending again since the second book (The Ashes and the Star-Cursed King) came out last weekend. I immediately ordered it, even before I finished the first book. Because it is freaking worth it. Still I am going to take a break with another book because it will take some time to recover from the heartbreak Carissa put me through.

But I am definitely hungry for more!

Kisses and hugs!
