Spoiler Free || Full of love, murder and magic. You should read Crescent City: House of Earth and Blood. And here is why! In a spoiler free review of Sarah J. Maas' latest series.

If you are still on the fence about reading Crescent City, let me leave you with my three reasons to pick it up: First, don't let the book's size scare you away - it's actually a con because you won't want it to end. Second, the extensive worldbuilding will transport you to a magical realm filled with fascinating creatures and intricate political systems. And last but not least, the badass female protagonist will leave you cheering for her every step of the way. Let me explain.
1. IT IS A BIG BOOK
You may have already come across the book Crescent City, which comes in various sizes, but the first thing that probably caught your attention was its size. This book is not a quick read, which may have initially deterred you. However, if you enjoy big books, don't think you can breeze through this one. With almost 800 pages, it's best to savour it, much like watching a crime show series. The first 50 pages of Crescent City are action-packed, but don't expect the same level of intensity until you reach page 500. When I read this book, I found myself pausing frequently to reflect on the scenes and try to uncover hidden clues, which made me appreciate the underlying plots even more. So take your time and enjoy the journey, rather than rushing to the end and calling it a day.
2. THE WORLD BUIDLING
Damn Maas for her imperfect, perfect world building. If you take on this book be prepared to be introduced to the most implicated world that has ever existed in YA books. The intensive worldbuilding in this book is one of the primary reasons to read it. Maas has done an outstanding job of creating a complex and fascinating world that covers almost every magical being in a modern setting. From angels who govern politics and solve crimes, to medwitches who practice medicine, and royal bloodlines of fae and werewolves, the world of Crescent City is rich and diverse. The intricate details and vivid descriptions of each creature's characteristics, abilities, and limitations are masterfully executed. Maas has created a world that feels alive, and you will be captivated by the intricate political and social systems that govern it. The worldbuilding in Crescent City is truly exceptional and it is a must-read if you appreciate a well-crafted and immersive fantasy universe.
3. THE ALPHA-HOLES
Yes, the man. The sassy, sexy, broody, winged and tattooed males in this book are so typical perfect that I would almost say this is cliché. Almost cliché, since Bryce fucking Quinlan knows how to handle these dogs quite fine actually. You could call her a emphasised, not realistic main character but she has these boys on a leash. She is my icon of positive body image in popular contemporary fantasy books and I adore her sass. I think you will grow to like her too, it just takes time to understand her complicated background.
4. TABS, TABS, TABS
I think House of Earth and Blood is amazing if you are looking for a read that you can tab. For this book I myself used the tabs: worldbuilding, plots, humour, quotes and love. And there is enough of everything in the first book of Crescent City. It is really a personal preference but I noticed really quickly that there were certain worldbuilding points in the book I wanted to track. Additionally there are, like we know from Maas' other books, many beautiful quotes that are just lovely to look back on. The first book of the Crescent City series lends perfectly for book tabbers. Currently I am looking forward to read book two: House of Sky and Breath.
Trust me, I know it may seem daunting to dive into an 800-page book, but with Crescent City: House of Earth and Blood, you'll be so engrossed in the story that you'll forget about the outside world. So go ahead, treat yourself to this epic adventure - your inner bookworm will thank you for it! And let me know if you liked it as much as I did.
